Dear readers,

The days are growing much shorter and the nights colder; the woodstove has been lit for the first time, and the dogs get muddy when we go outside now. We've been in the thick of the crazy-busy fall arts season (whew!) as well as hosting guests (noted UK sculptor Simon Gudgeon and his wife Monique). And late-breaking news: I'll be doing a 4-day workshop in Wimberley, TX (near Austin) at the end of this month!! Read on for more details.

In this issue:

Coming in the November issue: inside the Denver home of a major collector of western art!

DELAWARE, OHIO - Aug. 26-Oct. 23
The Arts Castle, "Equine Jubilee"

-- an award!!

I'm delighted to report that one of my paintings in this inaugural show won the award for "Best Contemporary Piece with a Non-Realistic Style". I send work to shows in order to reach a wider buying audience, not to win awards - but it's an awfully nice cherry on top!

I've been experimenting with purely black-and-white paintings, inspired both by the drama of my scratchboards and the looseness of my oil work. Using a drybrush technique with acrylic paint for the grays and thicker coverage for the blacks gives me a calligraphic feel in the brushwork which I like very much. Areas of stark white and black in the background let me play with losing some edges and highlighting others.

DALLAS, TEXAS - November 8
Collectors Covey Miniatures Show

I've been part of the Miniatures show at Collectors Covey for a number of years now, and it's always a pleasure and an honor to be invited back. This year I'm sending a duo of whitetail scratchboards; one is 12x9 and the other is 12x16, so they make a sweet pair when hung together. They're framed in lovely warm silver floater frames. For more information on the show, or to purchase, please contact the gallery.

Tidbits - Mark Rothko quotes
(inspired by my recent visit to the Rothko exhibition at the Denver Art Museum)

"There is more power in telling little than in telling all." ... a guiding principle in my scratchboard work.

"It is our function as artists to make the spectator see the world our way – not his way."

"A painting is not about an experience. It is an experience."

"Art is an adventure into an unknown world, which can be explored only by those willing to take risks."

LATE-BREAKING NEWS! "Capturing the Essence" workshop in Wimberley, TX
Oct. 28-31.

This will be my first full-length workshop away from Montana! The weather should be wonderfully warm, and a nice break for those of us from colder climes (e.g., me).

We'll spend time on drawing and values, of course, but with plenty of lengthier studio work focused on the 'craft' of our art - so participants will be taking home fairly complete studies in various media.

We will be working from some of my 70,000+ reference images of species from North America and Africa to help us understand the anatomy, gesture, and behavior of a variety of animals... and as with all my workshops, I'll adjust the discussion topics and reference material based on your feedback.

The workshop is hosted by the lovely Creekhaven Inn; others have described this as the "Cadillac of workshops" because the workshop fee includes lodging and meals - all is taken care of for you!

We have a few slots left - please visit the workshop website for more information.

READERS RESPOND - footnotes to the September Artzine:

"Julie, what can I say, your work continues to amaze me whether in Africa or the western lifestyle and world of the horse. Your love and appreciation flows thru out all of your work. Onward and upward, love your Artzine, however do you manage the time?? Thanks for including me, your faithful Calgary admirer." (Marjie F.) - what a heckuva nice note! thank you, Marjie!

"There are so many things I like about you. And now there’s one more: your excitement and willingness to help other emerging artists. Not all artists, musicians, etc. are willing to share themselves with others… they frequently see it as a threat to their established kingdoms. But, having teaching in my blood, I have always felt the same as you: that sharing your craft makes others great, and if they become greater than you, *that’s the whole point* of being a great teacher and mentor. There is no room for selfishness in art....

Keep up the great work. Your Artzine *never* fails to make me think about some aspect of art, beauty, soul, and joy. Continued good luck to you." (Al L.) I thoroughly enjoyed Al's note (excerpted here), and Al, thank you for sharing your thoughts and support with me.

That's it for October. I hope you have enjoyed this newsletter (and thank you to the many readers who respond after each Artzine, thus giving me good material for the "Footnotes" section :-) - if so, I encourage you to share it with anyone and everyone. I appreciate your help in building a bigger audience for my work!

Warmest regards,
Julie T. Chapman
